The kitchen is one of the most used areas of any home.  It's the gathering place for families and friends and is truly the heart of the home.  Even if you aren't in the market for a full, top-to-bottom redesign, consider bringing in one or two of these trends into your kitchen to spruce things up and make your home more appealing to potential buyers in the future.

Here are our top five trends in kitchen design for 2018:

Gray is the New Modern White

While white is still the most popular color for kitchen cabinets and countertops, gray is starting to make a statement of its own!  With its versatility, gray can comfortably go with and enhance any design aesthetic.  It's also very calming and doesn't show signs of age as easily as it's white counterpart.

There are many ways you can incorporate gray into your kitchen:

  • Wallpaper or backsplashes in gray will bring a truly elegant look to your kitchen

  • Gray cabinets against a warm colored background give a subtle pop

  • Bring in hints of gray with decor or towel accents throughout your kitchen

  • Gray glass light covers will provide a warm hue throughout your kitchen

Functional Can Also be Attractive

When thinking about redesigning a kitchen, the first places most of the focus is typically on are the colors of the walls, cabinets, and countertops.  While those are still great ways to breathe new life into a kitchen, today's kitchen redesign techniques challenge that limited way of thinking and allow you to have some fun!

Take a step back and look at your kitchen...what color would really make a splash?  Let that color become your inspiration and look for creative ways to incorporate it here or there in a more, unconventional way.  One of the hottest new trends to achieve this goal is through appliances.

You can now find virtually every kitchen appliance in a cool color or unique design.  Colorful appliances add a burst of playfulness and true personality to your kitchen.  They also make really cool conversation pieces and leave lasting impressions on potential home buyers.

Retro is the New Modern

The retro design style is making new waves in modern kitchen design.  The funky shapes, eclectic accessories, and monochrome colors are seeing new life in today's kitchens.

The retro look-and-feel of these new appliances can mix in with virtually any design style --- no need to go full-on Al's Diner if you're not feeling the Happy Days vibe.  When done right, they can simply add charm and whimsy to more classic design.

However, if you're feeling a bit more nostalgic, then start clapping because the colors and feel from the kitchen's of yesterday are back and are ready to transport you.  But don't worry, you won't lose out on today's advances because now they use 21st-century technology.

Just imagine your grandmother's oven with self-cleaning functionality, timers, and extra storage.  Better still, what about a classic FrigidAir that syncs to your iPhone and lets you keep track of what's inside so you can see what you're missing while you're at the store instead of finding out when you get home.  Talk about cool, daddy-o!

The Charm of Mixing and Matching

Why settle for just one when you can mix and match colors, patterns, and textures throughout your kitchen?  Yep, we said it....you now have clearance to channel your inner child and make kitchen design fun!

Be warned though, as there is an art to this type of mixing and matching designing.  If not done correctly, your kitchen can look more like Pee Wee's Playhouse than an excerpt from Architectural Digest.

They key is in the color palette.  Select something to be your grounding color, like brown granite countertops for example.  Then choose tiles, wallpaper, drapes, appliances, and even hardware that builds on that base color.

If you're considering putting your house on the market in the near future, then our advice is to stick with more neutral colors as those tend to have much better resell appeal.

Because Outdoor is Really In

Gone are the days of dad spending hours outside on the grill all alone.  Outdoor kitchens now allow the entire family to get in on the action!

Today's outdoor kitchens are both functional and beautiful.  Of course, grills are a staple and are often still the centerpiece of the design, but they now include sinks, refrigerators, wine coolers, warming boxes, microwaves, dishwashers, and even storage for plates, dishes and outdoor cooking accessories.

They often also include areas for gathering like bars and barstools, outdoor fireplaces, and built-in seating areas.  Just imagine the many hours of fun you and your family could enjoy this summer in an outdoor kitchen!
